A Rendezvous with Nature- Through The Lens of Dhiman Chatterjee

Dhiman Chatterjee, an independent photographer based out of Mumbai showcased his work at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2019. His work was part of the group exhibition titled ‘Here Among the Disappearing,’ hosted by Jehangir Art Gallery.

“I completed the entire project in 7-9 months. I thought it would be easy but it required a lot of patience and time while working with nature to achieve the desired results,’ he said, when asked about the entire experience.

His work is shot in an abstract style with his subjects- leaves. He collected these leaves from various trees around the country and assembled them in his studio under artificial lights. He waited for the right time, dimension, and observed it’s growth to achieve his vision. It also  involves a thorough check every 15 days on the outdoor plants since the veins expand or contract, its color changes and the texture can vary as part of the process.

Plants that were not usable were dried under artificial conditions over 3-4 months to achieve texture, folds, colour and a 3-dimensional look even when shot from a top angle. Given the challenges, the red and green leaves were picked from indoors instead of outdoors. He spotted them on the balcony and chose to use them.

Red is a bright and attractive colour that can be harsh on the eyes sometimes. In one image, Dhiman uses a red colour leaf and places a green leaf over it giving the photograph a unique background. The other green-red leaf combination was dried to achieve a 3-D texture and stand out among the other black and white photographs.
