Chetan Bhagat’s latest book and second novel from the crime series genre is a huge leap from his first – ‘The girl in room 105’. The protagonist ‘Keshav’ is the same, though the plot in arranged murder has evolved.
‘One arranged murder’ has all the ingredients of a Chetan Bhagat novel. A plot that keeps you intrigued, characterisation so desi, that one does relate to them, setting so real that it transports you to those places. The book to me felt almost like a film script inclusive of brand and product positioning et al.
While one always says his novels are perfect for the Indian mind, this book is a binocular view of the not-so-new Indian emerging market for the international audience (pitch deck for Karan Johar, eh?)
The author in this attempt seems exploratory in touching facets of crime almost wetting his toes to test how much of the envelope he can push to gain acceptance of an audience as versatile and varied as his. In my opinion that is admirable.
While Chetan Bhagat is a creative person, he uses his marketing skill sets with élan all through his writing. This makes me look forward to his trajectory of writing crime / mystery in the near future and beyond. After all, writing from Kashmir to Kanyakumari is no meagre task.
